Controversial actor Shia LaBeouf is reportedly embracing a more holy lifestyle.
LaBeouf, 37, who grew up with a Jewish mother and a Christian father, reportedly converted to Catholicism after filming Abel Ferrara’s 2022 biographical movie “Padre Pio,” in which he played the Italian priest, who was allegedly marked by stigmata in 1918.
On Wednesday, the Catholic News Agency reported that the former “Even Stevens” child star was confirmed on Sunday by Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, in a ceremony at Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California.
“We are thrilled to share that our dear friend Shia LaBeouf has fully entered the Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation,” the Capuchin Franciscans from Western American Province said in a statement posted to Facebook.
LaBeouf’s confirmation sponsor, Capuchin friar Brother Alexander Rodriguez, told Catholic News Agency on Wednesday that the “Transformers” star wants to become a deacon “sometime in the future.”
“He just spontaneously said, ‘I want to become a deacon,’ and he still feels that way,” Rodriguez said.
Unlike priests, deacons can be married — however, according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, if LaBeouf were to become a deacon while he is not married, then he may need to remain celibate.
According to “LA Catholics,” a deacon’s role involves, “At the Mass, the deacon proclaims the Gospel, may be invited to preach the homily, and assists at the altar. The deacon may also baptize, witness and bless marriages, preside at the Liturgy of the Hours, and preside at funeral liturgies among many other duties.”
La Beouf’s pivot towards a more religious life comes after the “Honey Boy” actor had several bouts of legal trouble in 2020 and was accused of abusing his ex-girlfriend.
In October, LaBeouf was charged with two misdemeanors — petty theft and battery — after he stole a man’s hat in a fight that turned physical. A couple of months later, his ex-girlfriend, pop star FKA Twigs, sued him over his alleged abusive behavior.
“It’s a miracle I came out alive,” the 33-year-old British singer told Elle back in February regarding her relationship with LaBeouf.
“I used to get this feeling of intense fear and shame, and I would evaporate from people’s lives. If you’re not talking to your friends or your family about what you’re going through, then there’s no one to regulate your emotions or affirm how you’re feeling. There’s no one to tell you that you’re in a dangerous situation.”
In May, LaBeouf was ordered by a judge to attend therapy, anger-management classes and he was ordered to wear a SoberLink device and submit to random alcohol testing.
In August 2022, LaBeouf, who wrote and starred in his critically acclaimed 2019 movie “Honey Boy” about his childhood, also admitted that he made up the parts about his father being abusive.
During an appearance on Jon Bernthal‘s Real Ones podcast, LaBeouf called his own screenplay “f–ing nonsense.”
“My dad was so loving to me my whole life,” he said, when he admitted his lie about the abuse. “Fractured, sure. Crooked, sure. Wonky, for sure. But never was not loving, never was not there. He was always there… and I’d done a world press tour about how f–ked he was as a man.”
