Joan Rivers would love Ozempic — and hate cancel culture, says daughter Melissa

Melissa Rivers misses her mom, Joan Rivers, every day.

The 55-year-old opened up about why the late comedienne, who died in 2014, would despise the cancel culture of today, yet loved weight loss drugs.

“She would have been very excited by body acceptance. That would have actually made her really happy,” Melissa told People in a recent interview.

“She would have thought Ozempic was the greatest thing since sliced bread,” Melissa joked. “Her two least favorite things were diet and exercise, so if she could find a way to avoid both? Awesome.”

GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro have currently been sweeping the health market and have been used by celebrities all over Hollywood to achieve their body goals.

However, Melissa believes that the “Fashion Police” alum would not be down with people being canceled almost daily, especially comedians in this day and age.

“I think she’d be very frustrated,” the “Melissa Rivers’ Group Text” podcast host noted to People. “She’d hate not being able to be funny.”

“She always said, when you make someone laugh, it’s like giving them a mini vacation. So when we all lost our sense of humor about everything, she would not have liked it,” she told the outlet.

“On the one hand, she wouldn’t give a s— if she were canceled. Then again, that would only happen if I let her out of the closet and removed the duct tape from her mouth.”

The “Apprentice” emcee also stated that Joan would be irritated at how A-listers struggle to make light fun of themselves, citing the recent 2024 Golden Globes as proof.

Melissa recalled: “People decided they weren’t going to laugh, so they didn’t. The fact that Jo Koy was taken to task for a joke that essentially complimented Taylor Swift.”

Golden Globes 2024 host Jo Koy infamously joked about Taylor Swift at the awards ceremony earlier this month, where he quipped about her relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce.

“I know what my mom would say, ‘Everybody lighten up! We’re the entertainment! We’re not serious people. We’re not doing neurosurgery! We’re not solving world hunger! We make entertainment,’” Melissa added. “She’d always say, ‘If you can’t laugh at yourself and at the dark times, you will not get through them.’”

Joan died a decade ago at the age of 81 after a botched outpatient procedure at an Upper East Side clinic.

The comedy legend suffered a heart attack and stopped breathing at Yorkville Endoscopy on Aug. 28, 2014. She died a week later.
