Tyra Banks turned heads when she was seen sitting in between two people dressed in furry costumes at the Nets-Knicks game at Barclays Center on Tuesday night.
The spectators alongside the former Victoria’s Secret model were “Furries,” according to House of Highlights, which posted a video of the colorful animals sitting in celebrity row.
Furries are “people who have an active interest in animal characters with human characteristics,” per Safer Schools, which explained that they are part of the subculture of Furry Fandom.
Banks looked confused in one video at the game, which showed her staring up and down at the Furrie sitting to the right of her.
Another clip showed the television personality being featured on the Jumbotron, where she appeared terrified while the Furries shared an exchange across her lap.
It’s unclear if it was planned and if Banks was aware she would be seated next to the Furries.
“These characters are often created by the community members themselves, who take them on as a ‘fursona’ (an alternate persona) who interacts with other ‘fursonas’ in the community via roleplaying and art,” according to Safer Schools.
Additionally, there are worldwide conventions and “meets” that serve as real-life gathering spaces for members of the Furry Fandom community.
Meanwhile, on the court, the Knicks beat the Nets 108-103 during the NBA’s Rivals’ week.
Knicks stars Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson each had 30 points, while Donte DiVincenzo and newly acquired OG Anunoby combined for 21 points and 10 rebounds.
New York Liberty stars Betnijah Laney and Courtney Vandersloot, former NFL players Cam Newton and Brandon Marshall and Grammy-winning rapper Common were also sitting in celebrity row.
The Nets (17-36) host the Minnesota Timberwolves (30-13) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
