A man sold his dead mom’s ashes on Facebook for $30 — someone bought them

Here’s one way to spread your late loved one’s remains.

A pair of popular TikTok users discovered that someone was selling an urn of human ashes on Facebook Marketplace and decided they needed to have it.

TikTokers Lauren Eliza and Mark tracked down and bought the human remains for $30.

Mark, who runs a “Marketplace Finds” account on the app, first spotted the listing in September, which noted that the ashes were the seller’s mom’s, and they were selling 2 ounces of ash and bone per vial for $30 plus shipping.

The seller added that the purchase included a copy of the cremation certification, but that the backstory behind the ashes is sold separately for $5.

“I’m not reliving the trauma for free,” the post read.

Mark then quipped, “If I sold my mom’s ashes, she’d come back from the dead and smack me upside the head.”

Following the video, Lauren Eliza, also known as “Lauren the Mortician” on TikTok, responded by saying, “Where’s the listing? Send me the listing. I want to buy, and I want to pay the extra $5 for the back drama story too. Who sells their momma’s ashes on Facebook Marketplace?”

Lauren added that she was “pretty sure” it’s legal to do — and she was right. There is no federal law in the US against selling human remains, according to Law.com.

“But it’s not every day you see somebody trying to sell their mama in glass vials on Facebook Marketplace,” she said. “Somebody send me the listing, I’m buying grandma!”

Mark posted an update that he bought ashes to send over to Lauren and interviewed the seller to “get the tea.”

When the package arrived, Lauren posted a TikTok reveal of her opening the package. The vial was placed in a hollowed-out book with skulls and flowers on it, and there was also a card in the package.

“Grandma has arrived,” she captioned the video.

When someone questioned if it was real in the comments, Lauren used her mortician expertise to confirm: “It’s real. You can see me in real time confirm… bc I see the 🦴 fragments.”

Ultimately, Mark was the one to share the backstory, posting a video on TikTok of the interview with the seller, a man named Chris Brown.

Brown told Mark that his relationship with his mom wasn’t the best, and her presence — even in the form of ashes — made him “uneasy.”

He spent a while contemplating what to do with his mother’s ashes.

“Do I just throw her in the trash? Do I just flush her? I don’t know, none of those brought me peace,” Brown admitted. “I just kind of made a post on Facebook to see how it would go, and it just blew up.”

Mark told his followers that he had read the backstory, but to sum it all up, Brown’s mom was an “amazing” woman but could be abusive toward her son, revealing a lot of “manipulation” and some “physical abuse.”

If people wanted to know more, Brown said they’d have to contact him directly, but he did share that he felt some relief from selling the ashes.

“Everybody always says that you should just forgive the dead because they’re dead,” he said. “And I very much felt, why does she get a free pass? She never tried to fix things when she was here.”

This isn’t the first time someone has tried to give away their mother’s ashes.

During Pink’s headlining set at the British Summer Time festival, the 44-year-old singer was performing “Just Like a Pill” when someone threw a clear, plastic bag with a powder-like substance inside — which reportedly turned out to contain their dead mother’s ashes.

In a video posted to Twitter, the shocked Grammy winner can be seen picking up the bag as she asks the fan, “Is this your mom?”

“I don’t know how I feel about this,” Pink admitted before placing the ashes on the edge of the stage. “I have to say that was a first.”
