Congratulations are in order for USWNT star Alex Morgan.
The San Diego Wave FC striker announced she and husband Servando Carrasco are expecting their second child in a video revealing she is retiring from soccer on Thursday.
“This is also not the retirement video I expected when I initially thought I was going to do this because Charlie is going to be a big sister. I am pregnant,” the 35-year-old Morgan said.
Morgan and Carrasco, a fellow professional soccer player, have a 4-year-old daughter, Charlie Carrasco, whom they welcomed on May 7, 2020.
“And as unexpected as this came we are so overjoyed,” Morgan said. “To me family means everything. I wouldn’t be here without my husband and my family uplifting and motivating and encouraging and supporting me and sacrificing for me for the last 15 years as a professional athlete.”
Morgan said her last professional soccer game will be when the San Diego Wave FC face the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium Sunday.
“I’m retiring and I have so much clarity about this position and I’m so happy to be able to finally tell you,” Morgan began the video while pausing through tears. “It has been a long time coming and this decision wasn’t easy.
“But at the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that i would play soccer.”
Morgan won two World Cups and one Olympic gold medal with the USWNT, though she was left off the roster for the 2024 Olympics.
