Controversial ‘bad parenting fee’ thrusts popular Georgia restaurant into the spotlight: ‘Horrendous’

Retribution is on the menu.

A restaurant in rural Georgia apparently out of patience with unruly young customers and their unconcerned moms and dads left diners everywhere in shock recently, after news of a dining surcharge — for bad parenting — went viral.

The Toccoa Riverside Restaurant in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where diners can feast on fresh, local rainbow trout prepared to their liking in idyllic waterfront surrounds, seems to have little interest in attracting day-tripping families, notifying those who dare bring their possibly punchy progeny along that the extra fee can be assessed at the discretion of the business.

The warning, right on the restaurant’s bill of fare, which includes a $39 ribeye steak drenched in herb butter and house recipe crab cakes served with a remoulade sauce, reads bluntly: “Adult surcharge: For adults unable to parent $$$.”

A photo of the menu recently appeared on Reddit with the caption: “This restaurant charges you extra for bad parenting.”

According to online reviews, the restaurant has been charging the fee for some time now — however, the recent resurfacing has now sparked a heated discussion.

“What is deemed as an ‘adult who can’t parent’? No grounds to charge extra if that were to happen,” one Redditor — sounding an awful lot like a harried mom or dad — insisted.

Another said: “Just say no kids…? Kids can be annoying, but they’re unpredictable because they’re KIDS.”

Several upset diners have left poor Google reviews of the spot, claiming to have been unlucky recipients of the “bad parenting” fee.

“The owner came out and told me he was adding $50 to my bill because of my children’s behavior,” Kyle Landmann claimed a week ago. “My kids watched a tablet until the food arrived, ate their food and my wife took them outside while I waited and paid the bill….Disappointed by the experience.”

However, overall Toccoa Riverside Restaurant has earned 4.1 stars from its 2,062 Google reviews.

Rodrigo Rivera also claimed to have a bad experience bringing his children to eat at the restaurant.

“Don’t go if you have children,” River simply stated. “We were 3 adults, 2 children and our 4mo baby and since we entered to the place they gave us a bad look. Later my wife was rocking the baby (not crying, just to make him sleep) and this “manager” told her that you don’t do that in a fancy restaurant (of course this is not a fancy restaurant) and later moved our stroller in a bad way.”

“Food is not good either. Do yourself a favor…go somewhere else.”

Other bad reviews claim the owner dislikes children, can be rude to customers, refuses service animals and serves overpriced and undercooked food.

“I’m not going to go into details about the horrendous night we had here but would highly recommend not going here,” Jennifer Jones mysteriously wrote online.

However, despite the protestations of some, the restaurant does enjoy an overall rating of 4.1 stars from its 2,062 Google reviews.

Along with the “bad parenting” fee, those thinking of visiting the restaurant should be aware that customers looking to split a meal should plan on paying a $3 sharing fee — but they’re far the only establishment to do so nowadays.

An Italian ice cream parlor, for example, went viral last month when a diner blasted them for charging for an extra spoon, while an Italian pizzeria outraged diners when they charged roughly $16 to slice a modest birthday cake.
