Filipino painter Elito Circa uses own blood as the medium for his art

He puts sweat, tears — and his own blood — into his work.

Filipino painter Elito Circa, 52, grew up so poor he used plums and tomatoes to make art.

When he got scraped as a youngster, he even tried using blood to paint with, and got hooked.

The artist now goes to a health clinic once every three months to have his blood extracted and stores it in a cooler.

“Every time I got scraped, I would use my own blood since bloodstains are also hard to remove,” Circa told Reuters.

The unconventional artist now travels to his town’s health clinic once every three months to have his blood extracted and stores it in a cooler in his Nueva Ecija studio.

“My artwork is very important to me because they come from me, it is from my own blood, my DNA is part of it,” said Circa.
