No fighting.
Netflix has released the first look photos of Cillian Murphy filming the long-awaited “Peaky Blinders” movie.
Production began on Monday, Sept. 30.
Per the streamer, creator Steven Knight said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”
In the photos, the Oscar-winning Irish star, 48, can be seen smiling with series creator Knight. Another picture shows Murphy in character as Tommy Shelby, wearing a suit and brooding – as usual.
The hit British gangster drama, which streams on Netflix, ended in 2022 after six seasons. Earlier this summer, Netflix confirmed that Murphy would return for the movie, which would be penned by Knight.
In August, it was announced that Oscar-nominated Irish actor Barry Keoghan, 31, had joined the cast of the film in an unspecified role.
Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth also joined the cast.
It hasn’t been revealed if troubled co-star Paul Anderson, who played Tommy’s hot-tempered brother Arthur, will return for the film. In January, he pleaded guilty to drug possession and was fined.
It also hasn’t been officially confirmed yet if Tom Hardy will return as the eccentric Jewish gangster Alfie Solomons, Tommy’s sometimes frenemy, sometimes ally.
The show follows Tommy Shelby (Murphy), a gangster in post-World War I era Birmingham, England, who is trying to rise in the world while also trying to wrangle the unruly members of his crime family, including his brothers Arthur (Anderson) and John (Joe Cole), his sister Ada (Sophie Rundle), his aunt Polly (Helen McCrory, who tragically died of cancer in 2021 at age 52), and his wife Lizzie (Natasha O’Keeffe).
John Shelby died in the show, and Polly was written off due to McCrory’s death, so they won’t be in the movie.
The term “peaky blinders” refers to the caps worn by the Shelby men, which have razor blades stitched into their brims, used to blind or maim enemies.
“It’s nuts,” Murphy told The Post in 2018, referring to the show’s popularity.
“I’m just constantly surprised how [‘Peaky Blinders’] continues to grow. Sometimes with these longform shows they tend to plateau, or dip, for a season, but ‘Peaky’ seems to have incrementally gotten stronger and I’m really proud of that. It’s a testament to [writer/creator] Steven Knight.”
The show boasts several celebrity fans, including Snoop Dogg, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and David Beckham.
Many big stars have played Tommy’s allies or enemies in the show, including Hardy, Sam Neill, “The Hunger Games” star Sam Claflin, and “House of the Dragon” star Paddy Considine.
In May, Rundle told The Post about the movie, “Everybody asks [about] that, including my own family. Even my mom is like, ‘Well, surely you can tell me!’ But I know nothing. I know there are conversations happening, but getting any film made is a logistical nightmare. I’m leaving the conversations to the grown-ups.”
It hasn’t been confirmed if Rundle will reprise her role in the film.
She added that watching Murphy’s rise to global stardom amid his Oscar win for “Oppenheimer” was, “kind of wild, but amazing to see, and so justly deserved. He is exceptional, and was exceptional in that film. It was lovely to watch him very calmly go through world domination in that very Cillian style of his.”
A premiere date for the movie has not yet been announced.
