Gary Cohen jabs Pat McAfee while wondering where Aaron Rodgers is instead of Jets’ minicamp

SNY’s Gary Cohen threw out a Pat McAfee-influenced theory on where Aaron Rodgers may be rather than attending the Jets’ mandatory minicamp.

The iconic play-by-play announcer discussed the national storyline with SNY Jets studio host Steve Gelbs while calling the final outs of the Mets’ 10-4 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night.

“So, where do you think he is?” Cohen asked Gelbs, who responded: “There’s a lot of possibilities.”

“Is he like under Pat McAfee’s couch or something?” Cohen then said in a zinger.

“That might be the best possibility,” Gelbs said while laughing.

That McAfee would catch a funny stray on the situation makes sense since he and Rodgers are quite close and McAfee offers the future Hall of Famer an open forum each week to discuss his thoughts.

It doesn’t matter what Rodgers says, be it about Jimmy Kimmel or COVID, McAfee does not challenge Rodgers and will almost always side with him.

Even in this current Jets drama, McAfee mocked Jets coach Robert Saleh for how he tackled Rodgers’ absence. Saleh said Rodgers skipped minicamp for something “very important to him.”

“Fascinating, in Aaron’s 20th year, he did not miss a single OTA,” McAfee said Tuesday. “What’s the life event? Because obviously Saleh heard it and was like, ‘Nah I don’t think so.”’

While McAfee may laugh, the reality is Rodgers has made the Jets’ minicamp a major talking point by choosing that football came second.

Saleh attempted to diffuse the situation Wednesday, saying he and his star quarterback are on the same page, but it appears their priorities do not line up.

Plenty of folks have weighed in on the situation, and the SNY crew — correctly, we would add — had more fun with the topic than just focusing on the final outs of a game between two struggling NL East teams.

Cohen had no problems being blunt about Rodgers’ Jets career.

“Aaron Rodgers has taken four snaps in his Jets career,” Cohen said.

Gelbs responded, “Yes, that’s correct,” before Cohen continued: “Do you think he’ll take any more?”

“I sure do,” Gelbs said. “And, I’ll tell ya, I don’t care where he is right now, just go win games in the regular season.”

“My feeling right now is if you look at their relative Jets careers, that Brett Favre has so far had a better Jets career than Aaron Rodgers,” Cohen said, before calling a strikeout.

“Well, I don’t even think that’s a question right now,” Gelbs responded, while Cohen laughed. “Gary, there are very few that had worse, at this point, but it’s still very early. And I’m optimistic as I physically can be, which I don’t know how optimistic that is. But I’m optimistic.”

Cohen then took Gelbs, a noted Jets and Rangers fan, down memory lane.

“You’ve suffered a lot of disappointment in the last years between Rodgers going down and the Rangers not getting to the Finals…” he said.

“It’s been a rough year,” Gelbs said in agreement.

Cohen responded: “I don’t know if you can handle a lot more, so I hope Aaron shows up sometime.”

The Jets pregame and postgame host then gave the world the glass-half-full outlook on Rodgers’ absence.

“I’ll look at it from this perspective, OK,” Gelbs said. “He showed up to every possible offseason practice, mandatory, non-mandatory, last year and what did it get him?”

It indeed got the Jets nowhere, and they can only hope there are better things ahead.

In the meantime, perhaps they can check under McAfee’s couch for his buddy.
