A woman who lives ‘where Beyonce and Jay Z vacation’ says it’s not as “bougie and fancy” as everyone thinks.
Casey Evans, 24, grew up in Remsenburg, in the Hamptons, New York, from the age of five to 16 before relocating to Manhattan, New York.
She says people “assume everyone from the Hamptons is rich” but claims that is far from reality.
Casey insists local residents get “annoyed” with the tourists – causing traffic jams and being rude to hospitality staff.
But Casey – who lived in a five bed home with her parents and two siblings – says the Hamptons will “always be home” and she misses the community.
Casey, who works in social media and marketing, said: “I feel like people always assume you’re very wealthy [if you’re from the Hamptons].
“That you walk around with designer bags and you drive a Lamborghini but that is not how the locals are but how tourists act.
“The locals are normal people, it is the locals working for the tourists who come to the Hamptons.
“It is not as bougie and fancy as everyone thinks.”
The Hamptons is a retreat for celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Moore and Beyonce.
But Casey says “there’s a lot of misconceptions” about living there.
She said: “I would say the Hamptons is a normal town, in the summer you would go to the beach and maybe to some restaurants.
“Social media has made it popular, I have seen lots and lots of videos on social media of people getting homes out there.
“Since covid, it has definitely got busier – everyone wants to move out there.”
Casey said some locals do get annoyed in the summer months as tourists will pack the roads and the beaches.
But other locals love the busy months as they rely on it to make a living.
Casey said: “It has definitely gotten worse over the years – after Covid a lot of people moved out here to escape the city.
“I would say that locals do get annoyed with tourists, traffic can get super crazy in the summer.
“What would be a 20 minute ride can turn into an hour plus.
“There is a huge mix of people in the Hamptons from millionaires and celebs to middle and lower class people.”
Casey claims a lot has changed since she grew up there and there has been a lot of housing development to keep up with demand.
She said: “The town I grew up in only had a post office and school – you used to have to drive 30 minutes to get groceries.
“Now everything round there is built up.
“They rebuilt the whole Westhampton beach and it looks very nice now whereas it used to be more chill and casual.”
Casey and her family moved to Manhattan when she was 16 but says the Hamptons will always be home for her and she tries to go back whenever she can.
She said: “I need to escape the city every now and again to see some nature.
“I have now turned into a Hamptons tourist.
“I love the beaches and the people there – I am definitely an ocean girl.
“I am very grateful to have grown up there.”
