In the age-old pursuit to make fleeting fragrances long-lasting, one perfume expert has seemingly cracked the code.
Josephine, better known online to her thousands of followers as Jus de Rose, revealed the three tricks to make the short-lived scents stay all day.
“Because there’s nothing more frustrating than finding a scent that you love but that you can’t smell after 20 minutes,” the London-based fragrance reviewer, who boasts a master’s degree in perfumes and cosmetics from ISIPCA in France, said in a TikTok video.
First and foremost, she advised, it’s vital to apply fragrance on clean skin. Then, she recommends lathering the skin with unscented body lotion, because “hydrated skin will better lock in the fragrance and will insure it lasts for longer.”
Josephine’s second strategy is to apply fragrance to clothing — albeit, at a safe distance so as to not stain the items.
“Fabric will latch on to the scent much better than on the skin,” the content creator explained while generously spritzing herself with perfume. “Don’t be afraid, you can totally over-spray.”
Lastly, she recommended dousing a hairbrush in perfume and running it through your locks.
“This will ensure that the fragrance gets onto your hair without having the drying effect of alcohol,” she added.
Experts have warned against spraying tresses with perfume because it contains ethyl alcohol, which could potentially damage hair in the long run, causing frizziness, breakage and split ends. Instead, using oils or serums, dry shampoos and some mists can add scent and still be hair-healthy.
Fragrance fanatics have touted Vaseline as the key to a long-lasting aroma — applying it before perfume, in theory, would make the smell stick around. According to the Guardian, the low-budget hack actually works, one journalist reported after testing a fragrance on a bare wrist and on another slathered with petroleum jelly.
“By the end of the day, after a sniff, the jellied wrist definitely has a stronger scent,” they wrote.
The secret, however, to maintaining the quality of fragrance lies in how it is stored, TikToker Emelia O’Toole, better known as “Professor Perfume” online, previously revealed.
“If you keep your perfume in the bathroom, when you shower, all of the steam, all of the constant temperature fluctuations are going to spoil your perfume a lot faster than if you store them correctly,” she said in a video.
Instead, storing them in a cool, dry place will maintain their freshness and fragrance for “years and years.”
“Say it with me: Hide them away to make them stay,” she wrote.
