Live toad found in supermarket salad bag as baffled experts try to pinpoint its origin

Animal experts are attempting to identify the origin of a toad — found in a supermarket bag of salad.

Graham Martin, from Berkshire Reptile Rescue, said he was asked to collect the animal on Monday by staff at Waitrose distribution center, Bracknell.

Since collecting the frog he had been keeping the toad in isolation because it was not clear whether it had come from overseas.

Graham said: “We have spoken to several herpetologìsts and narrowed it right down to a few species.

“But I’ll probably keep her (hoping it’s a girl as girls get bigger) as a pet.”

Graham explains they have narrowed the toads’ species down to two: “buffo buffo which is our common toad native to this country or bufo spinosus native to France Spain.
