Remember the heyday of MoviePass, in early 2018, when $9.95 per month got you unlimited movies? And then, remember when right after, MoviePass reported a loss of $40 million dollars in May 2018 and tried and failed repeatedly to restructure, before calling in 2019?
Well, MoviePass is back! Starting at 9 a.m. EDT on August 25, you can sign up for a waiting list for the beta version of the new model on the MoviePass website. But it’s not the same MoviePass we once knew and loved, which, let’s be real, was always too good to be true. Instead, this time around there will be three subscription price tiers — $10, $20, and $30 — each with a different number of “credits” that will be used to watch movies each month. MoviePass hasn’t revealed how many credits each tier receives, nor how many credits are needed to reserve tickets.
The waiting list will be open for five days. After that, selected beta users will be notified on September 5th and will then be able to choose a level. Additionally, that coveted MoviePass card will return – although this time, it will be black.
MoviePass disrupted the theater industry and since its rise and fall, many theater franchises have created their own subscription models.
