Shannon Sharpe needed just two words to give his thoughts on Bill Belichick replacing Mike McCarthy in Dallas after the Cowboys’ latest playoff flop.
“Hell, no,” Sharpe said Monday on ESPN’s “First Take.” “Man, do you not understand that coach Belichick wants authority? Can you imagine Jerry Jones trying to hold a press conference and tell what’s going on with the team, and you think coach Belichick is going to sit idly by and let Jerry do that? Absolutely not.
“It’s a match made in hell. You can’t pick a worse match than Jerry Jones and coach Bill Belichick.”
The Cowboys and Belichick became linked after Dallas’ embarrassing 48-32 wild-card home loss to the seventh-seeded Packers on Sunday.
For all of its regular-season success under McCarthy, Dallas has struggled in the postseason.
This year was supposed to be different with a loaded offense and Dak Prescott’s incredible season, but it proved to be the same old Cowboys.
Jones did not address McCarthy’s status after the loss, but it would not be shocking if Dallas turns to a new leader in an attempt to get over the hump.
Belichick now has +340 odds at FanDuel to coach the Cowboys in 2024, his third-best odds for his 2024 destination behind the favored Falcons (+170) and a non-coaching NFL role (+230).
The ex-Patriots coach has already interviewed with the Falcons.
While the thought of Belichick returning the Cowboys to the promised land seems a strong idea, Sharpe doesn’t see Jones turning to another head coach whose personality can match his.
Jones has employed bombastic coaches like Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells, but later turned to the more subdued Jason Garrett and eventually, McCarthy.
“There’s a reason he got rid of Jimmy. He got rid of Bill Parcells. Do you understand? Coach Belichick learned under Parcells. Jimmy, coach Parcells and coach Belichick are more alike. Once he got rid of Parcells, what has he done? Hired the Chan Gaileys, the Dave Campos, Jason Garretts, hired the Mike McCarthys – he don’t want that type of coach. He wants to be able to do everything, he wants to be the face of it.
“This would be a terrible match, coach Belichick and Jerry Jones.”
