Meghan Markle has revealed how her son Archie narrowly escaped a fire in his bedroom during his tour of Sussex in South Africa.
The Duchess, 41, spoke on TODAY about her frustration that she had to have another official engagement immediately, wishing others had some understanding of the ‘behind the scenes’ human moments that people have no clue about ‘.
She made the comment in the first episode of her Archetypes podcast, which is released today – speaking of her horror for ‘abandoning our baby’ as a drama when she and Harry were working.
The fire broke out when a heater in her bedroom caught fire, causing a fire in the nursery—though luckily four-and-a-half-month-old Archie was downstairs with his nanny when she went to get breakfast.
But talking about the stress Meghan is taking on her as a new mom, Meghan told the podcast: ‘In that time [the nanny] Went downstairs, the heater in the nursery caught fire. There was no smoke detector.
‘Someone started smelling smoke from under the hallway, went inside, put out the fire. He should have slept there.
The former Suits star revealed how she left her young son in the housing unit they were staying at to sleep straight after arriving on their official tour, Meghan and Harry headed off to visit Nyanga Township, where the Duchess delivered a speech.
‘There was a time when I was standing on a tree stump and I am giving this speech to women and girls, and we end the engagement, we get in the car and they say the house is on fire. What? There is a fire in the girl’s room.”
‘As a mother, you go, ‘Oh my God, what?’ Everyone’s tears are spilling, everyone is shaken. And what do we have to do? Go out and have another official engagement.
‘ I said, ‘It doesn’t make any sense. Can you tell people what happened?’ And I think the focus ends on how it looks rather than what it looks like.
‘And part of the humanization and breakdown of these labels and these fanatics and these boxes, that we have some understanding on the human moments behind the scenes that people have no awareness of and break to give to each other. Because we did- we had to give up our child.’
Speaking in the first episode of her Archetypes podcast, which was released today, the 41-year-old Duchess said the boy’s nanny had taken the four-and-a-half-month-old with her when she went to get breakfast.
