As Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins remains away from the team due to “personal reasons,” his girlfriend is speaking out against false rumors online.
In a message posted Thursday on Twitter, Mychal Johnson, called the internet a “sick place” as chatter regarding Wiggins’ absence from Golden State continues.
“The internet is really a sick place,” Johnson wrote alongside a vomiting emoji.
Johnson posted a separate note Friday, writing, “The farthest thing from the truth. It’s sad y’all even doing this.”
The 27-year-old Johnson also reposted a tweet that read: “Don’t believe everything you read on social media!!!”
Johnson, a former basketball player at the University of Notre Dame and a 2018 NCAA champion, did not elaborate further on her posts.
Wiggins has been away from on-court action since last month.
The 28-year-old was listed on the Warriors’ injury report before their loss to the Grizzlies on Saturday, with Golden State citing “personal reasons.”
The Athletic reported last week that one anonymous Warriors player said, “What he’s dealing with is some real (expletive).”
Earlier this month, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the “hope” is that Wiggins returns this season.
“We’re giving him his space as we’ve talked about as he deals with something that’s way more important than the game,” Kerr said after Golden State’s win over the Bucks on March 11.
“If he’s able to come back, then that would be great and if not then that’s the case and whatever happens, we handle it accordingly.”
Wiggins and Johnson have been dating for nearly a decade after meeting in high school.
The couple shares two young daughters: Amyah, 3, and Alayah, who turns a year old next month.
Johnson celebrated with Wiggins at the Warriors’ championship parade in San Francisco last June — before they jetted off to a beach location for an offseason vacation.
Wiggins played a crucial role in the Warriors’ NBA championship last year — when Golden State defeated the Celtics in six games to capture their fourth title in eight seasons.
The Warriors and Wiggins later agreed to a four-year, $109 million extension in October following his breakout season that included an All-Star nod.
The Warriors will face the Rockets on Monday in Houston, marking Wiggins’ 16th missed game.
