Kate Middleton appeared to breach Wimbledon rules during a recent session with tennis great Roger Federer, when the duo spent time with the tournament’s ball boys and girls.
Upon catching a ball that was about to go out of bounds, the Princess of Wales, 41, received accolades from a ball girl – but was told by Federer, also 41, that the move appeared to be a misstep.
“Are you allowed to do that?” the 20-time Grand Slam winner said, according to The Sun.
“In Australia, they would catch it, but here in Wimbledon, they don’t.”
When Middleton asked the ball girl if it was allowed, she replied, “You’re not meant to catch it. You’re meant to let it bounce and then get it, but good catch.”
Middleton and Federer engaged with the Wimbledon ball boys and girls ahead of this year’s tournament, which begins Monday and runs through Sunday, July 16.
In a clip shared on Wimbledon’s official YouTube channel, Middleton — who is married to Prince William, second in line to the British throne — can be seen playing a friendly match against Federer, an eight-time champion of the tournament.
Some royal fans commended Middleton’s efforts, calling her a “natural athlete” in the comments.
“Wow I didn’t know she can play tennis like this!” one commenter remarked.
Another posted, “The mixed doubles team I never knew I need it. The Princess of Wales can do if all!”
Middleton, a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, is a Wimbledon staple and frequently attends matches with the royals.
She and William, 41, watched the men’s singles final last year between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios with their eldest son, 9-year-old Prince George.
Djokovic won the championship match, his seventh Wimbledon title.
