Beloved “Star Trek” actor Sir Patrick Stewart has died at 86.
Stewart passed away in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday after a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body dementia, according to a statement on his Instagram.
“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” the statement continued.
“We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”
Born in Yorkshire, England, in 1940, Stewart enjoyed a decades-long career on stage and screen and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for his contributions to drama.
The classically trained Shakespearean actor became a household name in 1987 when he took the helm of the Enterprise as Captain Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
He won over a new generation of fans in the 2000s as Professor Charles Xavier in the blockbuster “X-Men” films.
