He’s been wondering if after all these years she’d like to meet — and help him get to work one last time.
Adele, 34, will be sitting in the passenger seat alongside James Corden, 44, for “The Last Last Late Late Show With James Corden Carpool Karaoke Special” — Corden’s last “Carpool Karaoke” as host of “The Late Late Show.”
But this isn’t the first time the two Brits will sing together while driving.
The “Hello” singer made her first “Carpool Karaoke” appearance in 2016 while Corden was home in London for the holidays.
Adele’s “Carpool Karaoke” clip has over 206 million views and is the most-watched video on the show’s YouTube channel.
In the special, “Adele surprises her longtime friend at home in the morning, waking him up and offering to drive the late-night host to work,” according to CBS. “Once in the car, Adele then turns the tables on Corden, asking him about past Carpools, pivotal moments in their friendship (including the time he tried, unsuccessfully, to prank her) and even a song she wrote that was inspired by an emotional conversation they shared.”
The video shows Adele sneaking into Corden’s house and waking him up, telling him that she will drive him to work for the final carpool, which elicits an emotional reaction from the late-night host.
In the final drive, Adele turns the tables on Corden, putting him in the passenger seat and interviewee position. She interviewed him about past Carpools, their friendship — including the time he failed to pull a prank on her — and even a song she wrote inspired Corden.
Adele shared that Corden had been a big source of emotional support for her throughout her career, sharing that Corden and his wife Angela looked after her and her son Angelo, 10, after she filed for divorce from Simon Konecki in 2019.
They had all gone on vacation together in 2020, and Corden opened up about going through a difficult time.
“I felt so unsafe with you feeling unsafe,” Adele recalled, saying that she channeled that emotional conversation into the first verse of “I Drink Wine,” which she said is “some of my best writing.”
“Carpool Karaoke” has been a fan favorite for many years, with many star-studded features including Paul McCartney, Madonna, Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, One Direction, BTS, Celine Dion, Elton John, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.
Luckily for fans of the segment, there’s still “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” on Apple TV+, for which Corden is an executive producer. The spinoff features celebrities sharing a car and driving around while singing along to their personal playlists.
Corden announced his departure from “The Late Late Show” in April 2022, just before renewing his contract for an eighth and final year.
It was previously announced that Corden, who has hosted the show since March 2015, will be joined by Tom Cruise, 60, for a big sketch during the special.
CBS recently revealed that after almost three decades, the network will be ending the franchise with Corden’s departure. They’re expected to replace the time slot with a reboot of Comedy Central’s series “@midnight,” executive-produced by “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert, according to Deadline.
Corden is the fourth and last person to host “The Late Late Show.”
“The Last Last Late Late Show With James Corden Carpool Karaoke Special” airs Thursday, April 27 at 10 p.m. on CBS and will be streaming on Paramount+.
Corden’s final episode will air that same night following the prime-time special, with Harry Styles and Will Ferrell as the final guests.
