Billy Joel is back.
The 74-year-old legendary musician performed his first new pop song in decades, “Turn the Lights Back On,” at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday.
Hours earlier, Joel walked the red carpet with his wife, Alexis Roderick, and their two young daughters — Della Rose, 8, and Remy Anne, 6 — at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Joni Mitchell, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Travis Scott, Fantasia, Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman also performed at the 66th annual ceremony.
Joel is a five-time Grammy winner who’s scored an impressive 23 nominations throughout his career. He last performed on the Grammys stage with Tony Bennett in 2002 to perform their duet, “New York State of Mind.”
He also sang the Big Apple classic at the 1988 Grammys as part of a special New York musical presentation.
Joel was the recipient of the Recording Academy’s MusiCares Person of the Year Award in 2002.
He first teased fans with his new tune at the Dec. 19 show of his Madison Square Garden residency in New York City.
“I have good news. I have bad news. I’ll give you the bad news first. We don’t have anything new to play for you. The good news is you don’t have to sit through something you have no idea what it is,” he reportedly told the crowd at the time.
“Although we’ve got a little something we’ve been working on you might hear sometime,” he added.
“Turn the Lights Back On” is Joel’s first new song since “All My Life” on Valentine’s Day 2007. The love song was dedicated to his then-wife, Food Network host Katie Lee, but the two divorced two years later in 2009.
According to the Post’s Chuck Arnold, his new single is “a welcome return from a man, who, now a senior entertainer, seems to have a new appreciation for the gifts that he still possesses.”
While the “Uptown Girl” singer has stepped away from songwriting in recent years, he continued to perform live shows — continuing his decade-long MSG residency, which is set to conclude on July 25.
Joel is also scheduled to perform with other class acts, including Sting and Stevie Nicks, this year.
