“Bob Marley: One Love” won moviegoers’ hearts on its first Friday in theaters, raking in $7.45 million, according to IMDB’s Box Office Mojo.
The biographical musical film, based on the life of the pioneer Reggae singer-songwriter, which stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, was released on Valentine’s Day.
The film opened to a poor Rotten Tomatoes rating and some negative reviews, with The Guardian saying “the reggae superstar deserves a better film than this,” and RogertEbert.com calling it “a flattened biopic devoid of a perspective or originality.”
In second place was the suspense thriller “Madame Web,” with $4.3 million in sales.
The superhero flick, which stars Dakota Johnson as a paramedic in Manhattan who gains the power to see the future, was also received poorly among reviewers, who called it “a dud,” “hollow” and “unintentionally hilarious.”
“Argylle,” which was in the No. 1 spot last week, moved down two notches to third, with a $1.13 million take.
The spy action comedy, which stars Henry Cavill, John Cena, Ariana DeBose and Dua Lipa, was released on Feb. 2.
“The Chosen: S4 Episodes 1-3″ moved up a notch to fourth, with just over $1 million in earnings. The episodes from the television series, which is centered around the life and ministry of Jesus, are being released in theaters before they air on TV.
“Migration,” which debuted on Dec. 22 and wasn’t even in the Top 5 last week, landed in fifth, with $770,000 in sales.
