Sky Sports Formula 1 reporter Martin Brundle has yet another awkward incident to add to the file.
While on the grid at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Brundle –– former driver and commentator since 1997 –– was denied an impromptu interview with model and actress, Cara Delevingne.
Brundle is known for his pre-race interviews with the celebrities in attendance, but Delevingne did not participate and she explained why after receiving some blowback.
“I was told to say no so I did. Thank you for seeing both sides xxx,” Delevingne wrote in a tweet on Sunday.
Delevingne’s comment was in response to an initial tweet from motorsport publicist Devin Altieri who came to the model’s side of the controversy.
“At this point, Martin Brundle is just doing it to manufacture the moment for the controversy of it all,” Altieri wrote.
“You can clearly see the PR rep tell him “no” and shake his head when he goes up towards Cara Delevingne. He had an out and he chose not to take it to make a statement.”
Alfa Romeo, the team that hosted Delevingne, also came to her defense on Twitter.
“Respect goes both ways: nobody should be placed in an uncomfortable situation or forced to do things against their will,” the team said.
After Brundle was turned away from Delevingne by someone assumed to be on her team, he had some comments of his own.
“She doesn’t want to talk? But everybody needs to talk on the grid, that’s the deal now,” Brundle said.
The veteran interviewer referenced the so-called “Brundle clause” that started after Megan Thee Stallion’s security pushed Brundle away from the rapper in October 2021.
Megan Thee Stallion ended up talking to Brundle, but opted out of his request for a freestyle rap on the grid.
“There have been new rules introduced, that any celebrities on the grid must not have bodyguards any longer,” Brundle said in the weeks that followed the interaction. “It must be the ‘Brundle clause,’ and they’re obliged to talk to me.”
Formula 1 clarified that while celebrities aren’t required to do interviews with Brundle, their security teams aren’t allowed to accompany them on the grid.
That wasn’t the last time a Brundle interview went viral for the wrong reasons.
In May 2022 at the F1 Grand Prix in Miami, Brundle mistook the now Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Brundle walked behind Branchero screaming “Patrick” trying to get his attention and didn’t realize his mistake until he was already interviewing the wrong person.
