Justin Verlander was hasty to start celebrating.
After the Mets swept a doubleheader over the Guardians on Sunday, Francisco Lindor was doing an interview on the field with ESPN’s Nicole Briscoe, and Verlander was getting impatient.
Lindor was answering a perfunctory question on “SportsCenter” when all of a sudden viewers could hear in the background, “F–k ESPN! Leave him alone, let’s go!”
Shortly thereafter, Verlander jumped into the picture and said, “Let’s go! My God! Stop asking so many questions!”
Lindor laughed it off and said, “You see, he’s rushing everybody. That’s something I learned from him, so, thank you very much!”
And with that the interview had concluded.
After a rocky start to the season, the Mets have ripped off five wins in a row.
The are now 25-23, five games behind the Braves in the NL East, and tied with the Pirates for the second Wild Card position if the season ended today.
Verlander pitched eight innings, giving up one run, in the second half of the doubleheader Sunday night, while Lindor went 2-for-4 with a home run in the 2-1 victory.
“Sometimes when you’re not going well, you just try to hover around .500,” Verlander told reporters after the game. “As long as you can grind and find a way to stay afloat, you go on a good run and all of a sudden you look up and it’s like: Wow, our record’s getting better.”
In the first game, Max Scherzer pitched through a callous to toss six scoreless innings, giving up three hits and one walk.
Verlander and Scherzer signed with the Mets this offseason for a combined $87 million per year, and Verlander is hoping the two future Hall of Famers are rounding into form.
“We all know what Max is capable of, and I’m hoping to kind of hit my groove,” Verlander said after his eight-inning performance. “That’s how you would draw it up on a day like today.”
