Australian singer and actor Troye Sivan has come under fire online for flogging locally made products after he promoted a $700 brass bowl without a bottom.

The Grammy and Academy Award nominated performer took to his Instagram on Saturday to promote the “bottomless (baseless) and beautiful” so-called bowl.

The 28-year-old told fans he had “been living with (the bowl) for a few months and it’s genuinely my favorite thing” but was swiftly criticized for the promotion.

Commenters dismissed the gold-coloured ring as a “hula hoop”, “glory bowl” and an indictment on consumerism, with one user stating: “This is crazy. That’s a ring.”

“There’s no such thing as a bottomless bowl, that’s a severely overpriced ring/hoop,” said one user. Another said they could no longer “take (Sivan) seriously. Is this real?”

Others called out the growing trend in celebrities creating their own brands, with one user stating: “These celebrity brands are getting more ridiculous and obnoxious each time.

“I’m sure someone will find this piece ‘artsy’ and ‘nouveau’ … go ahead and pay $700 for it. I don’t care one way or another but this is consumerism at its highest level of stupidity.”

The so-called bowls are being produced in collaboration between artist Joel Adler and Carlton, Victoria-based studio Tsu Lange Yor, of which Sivan is creative director.

They come in two sizes; one pitched by Sivan as being for “keys, wallet, headphones” and another, larger bowl suited to “perishables like tomatoes, citrus, and squash”.

According to Tsu Lange Yor’s website, the smaller bowl will set buyers back $196, while the larger bowl is $718. Both offer an option to pay with Afterpay.
