There’s more that went into Gerrit Cole’s Cy Young Award-winning season than “the stats everyone sees.”
One day after the Yankees pitcher’s first and unanimous American League Cy Young win, Cole’s wife, Amy, took to Instagram to celebrate the “hidden stats” behind the 33-year-old ace.
“There are the stats everyone sees: the wins, the strikeouts, the (lack of) earned runs. But I can’t help thinking about the hidden stats that actually fueled this award,” Amy began on Thursday.
“The growth. The tireless discipline. The way you meticulously fine tune your craft. The way you respond to setbacks. Your integrity, humility, gratitude, and the way you celebrate your teammates, all while making sure your family feels loved and supported… those are the real wins.”
Amy, who shares two young sons, Caden and Everett, with Cole, then gushed, “Love being on your team, G. Thanks for giving us yet another reason to celebrate you! Our (unanimous!) CY Young.”
Cole posted a 2.63 ERA this season, which also included 222 strikeouts across 209 innings and 33 starts.
He celebrated the win Wednesday with Amy, days after the couple marked seven years of marriage.
Upon being interviewed by Pedro Martinez on MLB Network, Cole was asked who he would most like to celebrate the accomplishment with.
In what seemed like an endless few seconds later, a grinning Cole replied: “I think it would probably be … it would be tough not to say Amy right next to me.”
“She’s been there since I was just a kid in school and she supported me in all different aspects and journeys in our life,” he said.
“… “She’s the one I’d like sitting next to me when I receive it, for sure.”
