dragon house has started HBO, and it looks like it’s already dispelled any doubts that it will be another high fantasy winner. In addition to breaking viewing records, the prequel series also wisely jeopardizes the connection game of ThronesIncluding an explanation of why Westeros ended this way.

After deciding to name Princess Rainera (Millie Alcock) his heir, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) tells her of a Targaryen family secret.
“Our histories, they tell us, are that Aegon looked across the Blackwater from Dragonstone, a rich land to be captured,” says Viserys, referring to Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen ruler of Westeros. “But it is not only ambition that propelled him to victory. It was a dream.”
Viserys explains why Aegon conquered the Seven Kingdoms in the first place.
“Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men. It is to begin with a terrible winter from the far north. Aegon saw the complete darkness riding upon those winds and that whatever lay within would destroy the living world. “
He continues: “When this great winter comes, Rainera, all of Westeros must stand against it. And if the world of men is to survive, a Targaryen must be seated on the Iron Throne. A king or The queen who is strong enough to unite the kingdom. Against cold and darkness.”

In short, Aegon wanted the Targaryens to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and Westeros because he believed that only his descendants would be able to unify the realm and thwart the rise of the White Walkers. These descendants turn out to be Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, who defeat the White Walkers with the help of Daenerys’ mighty dragons.
For anyone still heartbroken about Daenerys’ fate, there’s at least the smallest consolation in knowing that she managed to accomplish her family’s worthy mission.
Aegon’s vision of a great winter, the White Walkers and their threat to Westeros is named almost identically to the title of George R.R. Martin’s series of novels: A Song of Ice and Fire.
“Aegon called his dream The Song of Ice and Fire,” Viserys says. “This secret, it has been passed from the time of Aegon to the heir from the king. Now you must promise to carry it.”
Whether Princess Renera succeeds in passing on the family secret remains to be seen.
