Wedding planning has been chaotic for Celtics guard Marcus Smart and his fiancée Maisa Hallum.
The couple, who got engaged in December, has slowed down their wedding plans temporarily amid Boston’s quest to reach the NBA Finals for a second straight year and a few other curveballs life threw at them.
But fans are still hung up on Smart’s star-studded proposal, which included an alleyoop from Oscar-winning actor Will Smith.
Hours after Boston defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 139-118 on Christmas Day, Smart got down on one knee with a stunning princess cut diamond ring in a heartfelt proposal he planned with their lost loved ones in mind.
“I was actually going to do it earlier,” Smart told The Post of his proposal while discussing the launch of the new toothpaste, Pronamel Active Shield. “Both me and my fiancée have lost a parent — she lost her father, I lost my mother — so I was going to [propose] around the day that’s special to us, and make a special moment out of something that was looked upon as a tragic moment for us.
“And then things just didn’t go right. The timing just didn’t feel right, and I wanted some of my family members to be with me, and at that time they couldn’t.”
When things didn’t go according to plan, Smart had to pivot.
He decided to pop the question on Christmas Day — wound up calling a few people to request his and Hallum’s favorite actor, Smith, to assist with the proposal.
“So this past year, especially at Christmas, we were able to have Christmas at home — finally a Christmas Day (NBA) game. And it came to me that I could do it around Christmas, so that we can start off a new year with new memories and that’ll be something special,” Smart said.
On December 25, 2022, Smart surprised Hallum with a video message from Smith:
“This is Will Smith, oh, um, I’m in Antarctica. This is Antarctica,” the actor said in a video he shot with a winter-white background, where he was working on a National Geographic project for Disney Plus. “We’re just coming back from the South Pole but I just wanted to take a minute to wish you a very, very merry Christmas.
“Now, I know that you may not have gotten the stuff that you wanted. I promise you, you’re not going to end this Christmas empty-handed, OK? That’s just, that’s all my message is. That’s all my message is from Antarctica.”
At the time, Hallum appeared confused until she turned around and saw Smart, who was wearing matching Christmas pajamas, down on one knee.
Smart laughed when asked if Smith was one call away on his personal phone.
“I wish it was that easy, but no,” he told The Post.
“And like they say, I had to have my people contact his people and he was nice enough to take time out of his busy schedule and do that. We really appreciate Will for doing that and we’re thankful.”
Smart said he ultimately chose to reach out to Smith because “we’re both in love with ‘The Prince of Bel-Air’ and he’s one of our favorite actors. So I was like, ‘Why not?’”
At the time, Smart thanked Smith for “the setup help” to propose.
In a separate post on Twitter, Smart quipped: “… Time for me to leave the single life. She said YES!! (Whew).”
As for the wedding planning?
“We have [been planning], but life has hit us,” Smart said. “We’ve had a lot of things actually kind of happen that are out of our control right now, but we’re still planning.
“Things have been chaotic, but the planning has slowed down because of it. She’s she’s persistent, so the planning will pick back up soon.”
Right now, Smart is focused on Boston’s playoff run after the Warriors knocked off the Celtics in six games to win the NBA Finals in June 2022.
The Celtics got past the Hawks in six games in the opening round, beating Atlanta 128-120 to close out the series and set up a matchup with the 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Smart recorded 12 points, seven assists and three rebounds in Monday’s 119-115 loss to the Sixers in Game 1 at TD Garden.
“Everybody is in good spirits,” Smart said of the team’s mentality prior to the first-round Hawks series. “Everybody’s blessed to be able to be in [this] situation and have an opportunity to go do something special.
“We’re excited. We’re ready.”
Smart is also opting to keep his signature green hair for the remainder of the playoffs, which is beloved by Boston fans.
“That has been the question,” Smart said about whether or not he’ll switch up his hair. “I have been questioned. If we’re going to switch on my hair this year, I’m thinking that I have to keep it going. I have to keep the style. It was very trendy.
“A lot of people actually love the style, but you might see me really go between this style and the braids that I usually wear, but I’m trying to keep the style.”
Game 2 is set for Wednesday in Boston at 8 pm ET.
