Baseball is back and John Kruk is already in midseason form.
The irreverent Phillies analyst didn’t hesitate to make it all kinds of weird in the midst of Philadelphia’s 5-3 Opening Day win over the Rangers.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kruk mused to play-by-play man Tom McCarthy that he’d like to see Orioles outfielder Tyler O’Neill and Philly left fielder Adolis Garcia “oiled up and flexing after a good workout.”
Well OK, then.
The former Phillies first baseman isn’t one to keep his intrusive thoughts to himself.
In one game last season, he wondered aloud on-air as Philadelphia played Seattle on Aug. 18 how the person who invented the clock knew “what time it was.”
Later in the same game — with McCarthy talking about a sandwich — implored his broadcast partner to “just punch me in the face as hard as you can” if he ever became a vegan.
He’s previously talked about the time he learned it takes the same amount of pressure to open a jar of pickles as it does to rip off a person’s ear — a fact he said he learned at the Franklin Institute — and during his playing days, made it clear he was a “baseball player,” not an “athlete.”
It’s all part of what makes him such a beloved figure on NBC Sports broadcasts.
“He has a willingness to just say what’s on his mind and surrender to the boredom,” former minor league baseball broadcaster Nick Devlin told The Philadelphia Citizen last year.
“Because a lot of times, you’re just looking for something to talk about.”
If the first day of the new season is any indication, Kruk is going to give fans everywhere plenty to mull over.
