It was billed as one of the biggest matches in AEW history, yet the world title unification match between CM Punk and Jon Moxley was not the main event of August 24. gunpowder,
It was sold as such that the match would be televised to everyone even when the 60-minute time limit was reached. Mocks only needed a few of them.
The commentary questioned before ringing the bell whether Punk was back soon from a broken leg. And when he squealed in pain while delivering the roundhouse kick, it looked like they were right.
The interim champion did not take his foot off the gas, even as the trainers spoke to Punk at ringside. Moments later, after a Death Rider and a paradigm shift, Mox was no longer an interim winner.
The Cleveland crowd was almost stunned to cheer for their home state hero, and it didn’t sink in for punk right away.
Count me among those who don’t know where this leaves things all out, My guess is that Punk was not being sanctioned for working a full match there, and that provides an angle for a full-fledged comeback later. But that still doesn’t tell us who Mox will face at the September 4 PPV in Punk’s hometown.
But with all the parts, rumors, and reports going around about punk and AEW these days, who knows where it will fit in.
