The “Roast of Tom Brady” seemed to be a big hit for Netflix and nearly all of the roasters seemed to get a good reception from the crowd at Kia Forum on Sunday night — except for one.
Massachusetts native and Hollywood A-lister Ben Affleck led a roughly seven-and-a-half-minute roast of the future Hall of Fame quarterback that made little sense for the format as he ranted and raved about internet trolls.
It had sports personality Katie Nolan questioning whether he was sober onstage.
Nolan lamented that Affleck never seems to be at his best when it comes to doing something involving sports.
“Can I ask, how come in sports TV we never get good Affleck? Anytime he does anything on sports TV, we get ‘Is he on drugs?’ Affleck – alleged,” Nolan said Monday on “The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz.” “Just like I’m bad at telling if someone has fake hair, I’m bad at telling if somebody is on drugs. But he did give the energy of when you kind of get stuck talking to a guy late at a wedding and you don’t realize until you get too into a conversation that, ‘Oh, this guy’s on coke.’”
As Nolan mentioned, Sunday wasn’t the first time that a sports-related appearance by Affleck was called out for.
Affleck previously went on Bill Simmons’ since-canceled “Any Given Wednesday” HBO show in 2016 and launched into an expletive-filled tirade against the NFL over the suspension of Brady related to Deflategate.
Nolan made note of that Monday as she continued to critique his appearance on the roast.
“Ben Affleck, come on, babe. Step up,” Nolan said.
During the Netflix roast, Affleck railed against trolls on social media after he explained that Brady had shown the “Gone Girl” star his mentions on X and how toxic it was.
Affleck mentioned one specific user “Tallboyhenry” during his rant.
“Fans have your back,” Brady said. “You guys out there talking sh–t, all right, behind your f–king keyboard, that doesn’t make you a fan, that makes you a bitch.”
When it was suggested Monday that perhaps Affleck didn’t want to be there, Nolan had a simple suggestion.
“OK, then stop coming, how about that?” Nolan said. “You’re at the Tom Brady roast, you’re like the representative of the fan. … Like why was he coming at some ghost. I don’t even know, was that Twitter person real? I doubt it. I doubt he was actually talking to a real Twitter person who tweeted at Tom Brady.”
Affleck did eventually get into some jokes about Brady, though that did not stop Nolan from ranting about his appearance.
