Erin Andrews recalled an emotional moment when a misunderstanding on the sideline resulted in her calling an NFL player to personally apologize.
During a recent episode of her and Charissa Thompson’s “Calm Down” podcast, the veteran Fox Sports reporter, who covers the network’s top games, explained that the player was waiting to be interviewed by her, but things didn’t go as planned.
“If it was something that involved a team and a player, you and I are so emotional and invested in our relationship with that,” Andrews said. “We’ve talked about it. If there was ever a situation and we felt so bad… like I had a situation where a certain player was coming up behind me and I didn’t know.
“He thought I was going to interview him and we had to get off air.
“It ruined my day for three straight days.”
Andrews went on to explain that she later phoned the player because she felt so bad.
“I ended up having to call him and I was just like, literally, ‘I need you to know you’re like one of my favorite players and I was doing that because we had to get off air, not because I didn’t want to talk to you,’” she recalled.
“That’s another time we’d get emotional but it’s because we love our job and we love what we do so much.”
Andrews did not name the player she was referring to, or share his reaction.
The Wear by EA creator also did not specify which NFL season the moment occurred in.
Thompson added that she “could go on and on about this,” and the Fox Sports personalities planned to address it again at a later time.
Elsewhere in the episode, Andrews recalled breaking down in tears after a Tampa Bay Buccaneers player was “so nasty” to her early on in her career, which Thompson was shocked to hear.
Andrews “quietly” re-signed with Fox on a three-year deal in July 2022, after her longtime colleagues Joe Buck and Troy Aikman left the network for ESPN.
Thompson is a host at Fox Sports, as well as the host of “Thursday Night Football” on Prime Video.
