Phillies end $1 hot dog night after wiener-throwing fiasco

The Phillies have put the kibosh on one of their time-honored traditions: dollar hot dog night.

The team announced some of its promotions for the upcoming season on Thursday and noted that $1 hot dog night has been replaced by BOGO (buy one, get one) hot dog night for two games in April.

The team’s announcement included a veiled reference to a previous dollar hot dog night gone awry.

“This modification to the previous Hatfield Phillies Franks Dollar Dog Nights is based on the organization’s ongoing commitment to provide a positive experience for all fans in attendance,” the Phillies said.

During last year’s dollar hot dog promotion, hordes of unruly fans were throwing hot dogs at each other, and the concourses were so jammed that customers were spending multiple innings in line to get the franks.

“Dollar dog night, where people wait in line all night for a cheap hot dog and miss the entire game,” one X user tweeted.

“I’ve never seen so many people in line for a hot dog before… this dollar dog night had to top any the stadium has ever had,” wrote another.

Dollar dog night had been a fan favorite since the promotion began in 1997, and the Phillies’ announcement was met with some consternation.

“Nobody wants a BOGO hot dog night. We want a dollar dog night,” Kyle Pagan, a blogger at the Philly sports fan site Crossing Broad, said in a ranting video.

“It’s bulls–t. It’s absolutely bulls–t. They’re blaming it on clogged concourses and people throwing hot dogs. You motherf–kers stopped taking cash! Now we’re swiping transactions, it’s taking two minutes to get every transaction through. Whose fault is this? It’s your fault! This is all your fault!”
