Rob Lowe reveals ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ sequel is in the ‘early stages’

Rob Lowe teased a sequel to the 1985 classic “St. Elmo’s Fire.”

Almost 40 years since the coming-of-age film was released, Lowe, 60, said that the project is in the “early stages” of development during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on July 29.

While promoting the second season of his comedic Netflix show “Unstable” with his son and co-star, John Owen Lowe, 29, Rob opened up about the rumored reboot.

“We’ve met with the studio, and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Rob revealed. “But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages. So we will see.”

Rob starred alongside Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy in the beloved film, which followed seven friends navigating life and friendships post-college graduation.

Rob, who played Billy Hicks in the pop cultural touchstone, was in his 20s and was deemed a Hollywood heartthrob with a chiseled jawline and a mullet.

The “Dog Gone” actor said the release of the Brats documentary has “only added to the excitement around it.”

McCarthy, who played Kevin Dolenz in “St. Elmo’s Fire,” released “Brats” in June. The Hulu documentary addressed the difficulties coping with the “Brat Pack” label, which coined a group of young actors who embodied the culture in the 1980s and continuously starred in coming-of-age films like “The Breakfast Club.”

Rob, who appeared briefly in the documentary, said he came to embrace legacy of the Brat Pack.

“To be a part of something that has the staying power is something. The fact that people are still interested, remember, love the Brat Pack is really, really cool,” Lowe told PEOPLE after the documentary’s release.

“What was fun about that and what I think is fun about the documentary and fun about talking to Andrew, is how differently we all perceived being a part of that phenomenon. Some people really struggled with it,” he shared.

During the documentary, McCarthy asked Lowe if the label would follow them to the end, to which Lowe replied, “It will, for sure. It should.”

“We were so lucky to be in the right place at the right time as the movie business was beginning the transition to where it landed and still exists — which is movies made almost exclusively for 18- to 20-year-olds, every summer movie that’s out is geared towards that audience,” he continued. “It wasn’t always like that. We were there at that time that it began.” 

The seasoned actor later said the label “changed all of our lives…it changed what entertainment is.”

Lowe’s son John admitted during the interview that he had never seen the movie and dubbed it “St Elmers.”

The father and son duo have been co-stars on the Netflix show since March 2023.

“Unstable,” created by Rob and John, follows a son with social problems who is forced to work for the company of his eccentric and exotic father.

“This whole show is based on his incessant trolling of me on his Instagram,” Rob joked. “So the very nature of this relationship, and being able to put it out there on a TV show, is so special.”

Season 2 of “Unstable” premieres on Netflix on August 1.
