It could be a life-changing week at Augusta National for Scottie Scheffler and pal Sam Burns for a multitude of reasons.
Not only is Scheffler, the 2022 Masters champion, seeking his second major victory, but he and wife Meredith are expecting their first child at the end of the month.
Burns — in search of his first major win — and his wife, Caroline, are due to welcome a bundle of joy of their own in the coming days.
In the event Meredith or Caroline goes into labor during the tournament, Scheffer and Burns, both 27, would withdraw from the tournament, Golf Channel reported Monday night.
Scheffler, the current world No. 1, is a favorite to win the first major of the 2024 season — which comes just weeks after his Players Championship victory at TPC Sawgrass in March.
He celebrated the Players Championship win with Meredith, whom he wed in 2020.
“It’s going to be pretty wild. I don’t think it’s hit either of us quite yet but it’s an exciting time for us as a family,” Scheffer said earlier this year, according to Golf Digest.
“It’s been a pretty exciting last seven months or so and we’re looking forward to hopefully getting the baby out of there nice and healthy and with a healthy momma, and then we’ll go from there.”
Scheffler finished tied for 10th at the Masters last year while close friend Burns tied at 29th.
A five-time PGA Tour winner, Burns turned pro in 2017 and is currently ranked No. 22 in the world.
He has known wife Caroline since childhood, per People, and the couple tied the knot in 2019.
“I couldn’t imagine doing life without you. Here’s to many more memories together with the most beautiful person I know inside and out. I love you, Caroline Burns!” Burns gushed on Instagram in December 2021 as the couple celebrated their second wedding anniversary.
The opening round of the 2024 Masters begins on Thursday with the final round concluding Sunday.
