Shannon Sharpe doesn’t subscribe to the notion that he has to be a Big-J journalist to host an entertaining podcast.
Sharpe conducted a widely viewed interview on his Volume “Club Shay Shay” show with comedian Katt Williams earlier this week, as Williams went double-barrel on various rivals in the entertainment industry in specific and even what he called the Hollywood “cabal” or “consortium” among the decision-makers in general.
In his followup “Nightcap” podcast with Chad Johnson, Sharpe explained to detractors who griped that he didn’t cross-examine Williams with journalistic follow-up questions that he doesn’t view it as his role.
In a previous episode of “Club Shay Shay,” Cedric the Entertainer denied stealing jokes from Williams, and this week Williams vigorously pushed back on those claims.
Sharpe punted the idea on attempting to adjudicate the disputed arguments one way or the other.
“That’s not for me to decide,” Sharpe told Johnson.
“You decide — who do you agree with? It’s not my decision to make! I never said I was a journalist! I never professed to be a journalist! I’m an entertainer. If you want hard-hitting questions, ’60 Minutes’ is the platform for you. ‘Dateline.’ ’48 Hours.’ Go to Lester Holt. Go to someone that does that.”
Sharpe’s interview with Williams — who also accused Kevin Hart of getting installed atop his perch in Hollywood by executives despite not having earned it by being a big draw with the public — drew massive engagement.
At one point, it had over 100,000 live concurrent viewers on YouTube, and it has reached 15 million total views on the platform.
The show rose the No.1 podcast in the sports category — and No. 3 overall — on Apple podcasts.
Sharpe left FS1’s “Undisputed” last summer, and in addition to his podcasts, he appears twice a week alongside Stephen A. Smith on ESPN’s “First Take”.
