Stephen A. Smith ignited a painfully awkward moment with Molly Qerim when he couldn’t stop saying “vibrating” on-air.
During Thursday’s episode of “First Take” on ESPN, Smith was discussing Raiders wideout Davante Adams and his frustration with the offense when he heard his co-host’s phone nearby.
“That’s Molly’s cell phone ringing by the way,” Smith said.
“It’s not ringing,” Qerim interjected, to which Smith replied, “[It’s] vibrating.
“I tried to say ring. Do you want me to say vibrating on the air?” he asked.
“You always like me mentioning vibrating on the air with your phone. Do you really want me to do that?”
Meanwhile, NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky pulled a Phillies fight towel over his face to cover his reaction.
“Just go with the ring,” Smith urged. “Just go with the ring, Molly!”
Qerim looked mortified with her eyes opened wide.
“I want everyone to know that I distance myself from these comments,” she said, appearing to hold back laughter.
“I have nothing to do with anything that just happened.”
That’s when Smith explained that he was “trying to avoid the vibrating.”
At this point, Orlovsky was seen with the red Phillies towel draped over his head.
“I’m trying to avoid getting fired,” the former NFL player said.
“That’s what I’m saying,” Smith added. “Didn’t I say ring, Dan? I said ring.”
Qerim then reminded Smith that he was on the set of “First Take,” and not his podcast, during which he usually addresses salacious topics in sports and pop culture.
“This isn’t the ‘Stephen A. Smith show’ on YouTube,” she said. “It’s Disney.”
Qerim then moved on to talking about the Dolphins.
Elsewhere in the episode, Smith pulled out Qerm’s personal computer, which showed her looking at a blazer on her internet browser.
However, the host wasn’t shopping on the job.
Qerim was instead trying show Smith that her outfit wasn’t pleather, an imitation of leather.
The co-hosts usually banter about one another’s outfit choices, so the moment wasn’t that out of pocket.
