Alex de Minaur knocked off the great Novak Djokovic on Wednesday.

But his toughest return came after the match.

That’s when de Minaur, the world No. 12 from Australia, was grilled at the press conference about when he plans to propose to longtime girlfriend and fellow tennis pro Katie Boulter.

Ash Williams, a self-described comedian who identified himself as affiliated with “The ATP Podcast,” began his aggressive line of questioning by mentioning how Australian tennis hero Lleyton Hewitt proposed to his now-wife at the 2005 Australian Open.

We pick up there:

Will we get a proposal to Katie after the AO?

De Minaur: Jeez. Putting me on the spot here. Yeah, it’s not on the cards just yet. Not ruling it out. For the time being, I’m going to try to focus on playing tennis and then we’ll think about the off-court activities.

If you win the AO?

De Minaur: It wouldn’t be a bad way to celebrate, let’s just say that.

Deal.

Talk about trying to hold at love.

The 24-year-old de Minaur and 27-year-old Boulter, the top-ranked British women’s player (No. 57), have been dating for several years. They went Instagram-official in March 2021.

De Minaur is playing the best ball of his career, just in time for his country’s home grand slam tournament. The Australian Open begins on January 14.

The 6-4, 6-4 win over Djokovic in the United Cup (a national team-based tournament) certainly was auspicious, though Djokovic, naturally, complained during and after the match about a wrist injury.

“Novak is an unbelievable competitor and what he’s done for the sport is pretty special. It feels surreal, amazing, and I’m very happy to do it here in Perth,” de Minaur said after snapping Djokovic’s 43-match winning streak on Australian soil.

“When you go up against Novak you have to go out and enjoy it and back yourself, and no matter what keep fighting until the end. Today was my day and I’m happy that I was able to get the win.”
