UK mom divides internet over how she butters her bread — and it’s not with a knife

A UK mom has caused quite the stir after sharing the bizarre way she spreads butter onto bread.

Teresa Basquine, 47, has come out to say she always butters her bread with a spoon rather than a knife.

Basquine showcases all the different meals she makes in a week on her TikTok account that features a series titled “Mark’s Lunchbox” where she shows herself making her husband, Mark Read, lunch and using the unique “buttering” method instead of the traditional knife technique.

The Cambridge mother, who calls herself the “CEO of Hummus plate, Spoon technique & mini grater,” says she wasn’t taught to use a spoon, but she has done it since she was a child and there is a reason to her madness.

“My mom said I used to do it as a child. Nobody ever taught me and I don’t really know anyone else who does it but I’ve always used a spoon,” Basquine said, according to SWNS. “It just stops the bread or crackers breaking compared to using a knife!”

In one video, the home cook takes out two white rolls and, after cutting them open with a knife, takes a spoon to a tub of butter, using the back to “scoop” up some butter and generously spreads it onto the awaiting bread.

Basquine, who works as a full-time nanny, created the account last year to showcase all the different meals she makes in a week.

She has over 99,000 followers with 1.4 million views, and says people have been mesmerized by her methods since she first started sharing her videos.

“It’s gone crazy, ever since I’ve been doing it people have commented,” Basquine told SWNS.

The unusual buttering process has gotten mixed reactions from commenters, some calling it a great idea, while others were surprised to see the spoon.

“I showed my partner your video and he was buzzing that you use a spoon he does the same,” one commenter said.

“It’s the butter spreading with a spoon for me,” another exclaimed.

“Every time you use a spoon to spread it blows my mind,” a third mentioned

“Not a criticism at all but I rarely see anyone use a spoon to butter bread. Is it better?,” one commenter asked with Basquine responding “100% I’ve always done this.”

“Why do you use a spoon to spread things and not a knife the normal way?,” someone asked.

While Basquine stands by her buttering ways, and many commenters are fascinated by it, some etiquette experts say it is wrong.

“The only correct way to butter and eat your bread is to 1. Using a knife, put a bit of butter on the side of your bread plate first,” said modern etiquette coach Maggie Oldham, before adding you should “tear off one bite-sized piece of bread at a time and butter that piece only, right before putting it into your mouth.”
