JJ Redick calls Chris Russo ‘the absolute worst’ in silly Jaylen Brown debate

Chris Russo and JJ Redick are no strangers to bickering with each other, and the saga continued Wednesday in a hilarious debate about Jaylen Brown on ESPN’s “First Take.”

Brown shot 8-for-23 from the field and turned the ball over eight times as the Celtics got thumped at home, 104-83, in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals by the Heat on Monday night.

Brown is also a free agent next summer, and it would cost the Celtics $295 million over five years to retain him on a supermax contract.

So the “First Take” crew was arguing about whether the Celtics should keep Brown or not, and the Mad Dog contended there were at least 20 players in the NBA who are better than Brown.

Russo went through the obvious subjects such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, LeBron James, and Nikola Jokic, eventually winding his way to players he has made a habit of excoriating in the past, such as Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Kyrie Irving.

“You put Kyrie Irving on the list?” Stephen A. Smith asked. “That is not a genuine list!”

Smith also took issue with Jimmy Butler being on Russo’s list of players better than Brown, stunning both the Mad Dog and Redick, calling it “debatable.”

“This entire conversation started because I said he was a top 20-25 player, which means he’s not ninth, he’s in the 20-25 range,” Redick said.

“You named 20 really good players, but you are the absolute worst. The fact that you put Kawhi, Paul George and Kyrie on that list as being better than Jaylen Brown, when all you do is complain about their availability — stop it, man!

“I’m not debating whether those guys are more talented than Jaylen Brown, but Brown plays. He’s available.”

This debate didn’t quite live up to the time Redick opined that Bob Cousy was competing against “plumbers and firefighters,” but it caused a good chuckle.
