The Cavinder twins got open and honest about their difficult relationship with food.
In a 29-minute video posted to their YouTube channel and a pared-down one on their Instagram feed, Haley and Hanna revealed that they have been afflicted with anorexia nervosa.
The two had decided to share the video on June 2, which is World Eating Disorders Action Day.
“Something that Hanna and I have been struggling with for years now … is our eating habits,” Haley said.
Hanna added that after the two transferred from Fresno State to Miami in April 2022, she started “calorie counting” and became extra sensitive to the things she ate.
The twins noted that their issues seemed to first start when they limited their food intake while at Fresno State.
“If we’re going to do something we’re going to do it 100 percent,” Hanna said. “There’s no in-between, so it’s extreme. That’s just kind of how our minds work. And I feel bad because I started calorie counting — it was kind of me.
“It started getting very toxic with eating a certain amount of calories a day. But we’re burning so many calories, we’re not taking in enough.”
So the twins, who were two of the highest-paid college athletes, reached out to fitness guru — and Alex Rodriguez’s ex — Kathryne “Kat” Padgett.
Padgett noted how she helps people become “their best selves” and added that the Cavinders were not eating enough not only for their sport but for everyday living.
The twins’ goal at the start of 2023 was to fix their relationship with food, especially after the two described their issues with hormonal imbalances, among other issues.
When Padgett came in, she noted how the two had “unsustainable” eating habits and would forego food for extended periods and then binge at certain other points.
The fitness coach worked with the two, most notably getting their carbohydrates intake up.
At the end of the video, the Cavinders said they feel like they’re in a better place than they were in January, and they were finally honest with themselves to share the video with their large social media following.
“We want to help people,” Haley said. “Genuinely want to help people, so feel free to reach out, don’t be afraid to talk to someone.”
The Cavinder twins garnered attention during March Madness when the senior guards helped Miami reach its first Elite Eight in program history.
The two graduated from Miami at the end of May, but have still worked on developing their brand with deals with various companies.
