A mom has taken to TikTok to share the hilarious story of how she allowed her son to choose what he wanted to call her, hoping for something endearing.
She also wanted to avoid any confusion for her son (who she shares with her wife) as he has two moms.
But to her surprise, he ended up choosing a formal name that sounds more like what a business colleague would use.
It started well but took a strange turn…
Initially, they let their son set the pace in deciding what to call them and it started out well, but then took a strange turn…
“We always said, ‘We’re going to let him decide, he’s going to set the pace’,” she explained in the clip.
“Obviously you have to call yourself something so it started out that I was Mommy and my wife was Mama.
“But it’s developed into a real formal version of that. He calls me Mommy Stacey and I hate it.”
She joked that she feels like she’s in a business meeting whenever he uses the name and wishes he would just call her “Mommy” as she’s the only one (her wife is Mama, remember?).
‘We’re not peers, bro’
“We’re not peers, bro – why are you using my first name?” she continued.
“I’ve tried to break him of it, I’m like, ‘You can just call me Mommy’ but he doesn’t.”
“That’s not how he addresses me and he never will,” she concluded.
“I see where he got that – obviously my wife and I are calling each other by our first names… I can see the leap. But I don’t like it.”
In the end, Stacey jokes that at least he didn’t pick something worse – like her 15-year-old calling her “Bruh.”
She then ends by warning other parents against letting kids choose names, as it might not turn out cute as expected.
“If you’re thinking about letting your children choose, do not. It could backfire.
“I thought it was going to be something real cute but it’s something that I would receive from the government, you know?”
“I was hoping for something cute like Momo or Mimi but not this,” she added in the caption.
‘My daughter calls me mothership’
The comment section was filled with other parents laughing along and sharing their similar experiences.
One person’s two-year-old calls them “other mom” while another mom’s toddler referred to her and her wife as “mama car” and “mama truck” based on what they drove.
Another mom shared that her daughter sometimes calls her “mothership,” leaving them unsure whether to be impressed or offended.
“Why? For what reason? How do you even know that name?”
Someone else admitted, “I am always flabbergasted when my children address me by my government name. Why? For what reason? How do you even know that name?”
“My brother called our mom Margret for years. Her name isn’t even slightly similar,” someone else joked.
