He’s lukewarm about his name.
A 17-year-old has taken to Reddit to share his unfortunate first name, with plans to change it the moment he turns 18.
“My name is Lewckee,” he wrote in the Friday post. “Pronounced like LOOK. I’m changing my name to Luke right when I’m turning 18.”
Lewckee explained that he was named in honor of his grandfather.
His post, “Next year getting rid of my tragedeigh name,” was met with hundreds of responses from commenters who couldn’t believe that such a name even existed.
“WOW this is truly atrocious,” someone emphasized. “I feel bad for you kid. Good call!”
“Lewck. Ok, pronounced Luke, makes sense,” one person typed. “But what’s the extra ee for? Good luck man, hope the change goes smoothly.”
“Thank you,” another joked. “Nobody else should have to figure out that pronunciation.”
“Yes, please tell your parents they are idiots,” one Redditor directed. “One ‘e’ you might be able to say it’s silent. Two e’s? That’s not how English works.”
In an update to the Reddit thread, Lewckee revealed that he broke the news to his parents, who seemed to support his decision.
They even found the post on the social media platform funny, apparently.
“I thought they would be mad at me, but my dad sat me down now and told me that even if he doesn’t like it, he will support every decision I will make, and if changing my name is that important for me, he understands and accepts me,” Lewckee shared.
Lewckee isn’t the only person desperate to change a uniquely-spelled name.
One woman wrote to Slate’s parenting advice column in 2019, complaining that her husband secretly changed the spelling of their newborn’s middle name to make it more “masculine” after his mother allegedly told him to.
“Finley” became “Finlay” without the advice-seeker’s knowledge.
“Apparently, his mother guilt-tripped him into doing this…Keep in mind she lives a few states away, so this was all over the phone,” the disgruntled mother claimed in the column.
And earlier this year, a Canadian couple who named their daughter Chree was met with disdain from friends and family who thought it sounded like “tree,” which is a code name for cannabis.
The girl’s full name is Chree Mary Jane, with the middle name inspired by a relative.
