NFL brothers Jason and Travis Kelce are getting candid about an emotional chapter of their childhood.
In the new Amazon Prime Video documentary “Kelce,” which chronicles Eagles center Jason Kelce through the 2022 season as he contemplated retirement, Travis — who is a tight end on the Chiefs — expressed how he suspected early on that parents Donna and Ed Kelce were going to split up.
“I knew my mom and dad’s situation was different than other parents,” Travis said in the documentary. “I would go and have sleepovers at other houses and the other parents are staying in the same room, and my parents didn’t stay in the same room.
“I started making those connections when I was in middle school and I realized that they were probably gonna split — but they stayed together for me and Jason’s benefit, I believe.”
Donna and Ed were married for nearly 25 years and split after raising their sons together.
It’s unclear exactly when they parted ways.
Ed explained in the documentary that he and Donna made sacrifices to make sure their sons found their passion and followed it.
“If we had split as we probably both would have preferred, that would have been a nightmare with the logistics, getting kids where they had to be and providing all the support,” Ed said.
Donna recalled that time as being “tough” while juggling parenting.
“Just trying to keep it all together when you’re being a parent,” she said. “It’s tough.”
Elsewhere in the documentary, Jason, 35, explained that fatherhood made him realize the sacrifices Donna and Ed made for him and Travis, 33.
“I think I told my mom after Wyatt was born, maybe the first year, I was like, ‘I’m sorry, I had no idea what you guys were actually sacrificing and doing on a daily basis for us,’” Jason said.
The Super Bowl champion’s wife, Kylie Kelce, is featured in the documentary, along with the couple’s three young daughters: Wyatt, 3, Elliotte, 2, and Bennett, 6 months.
Kylie shared that she and Jason met on Tinder, and she believed she was getting catfished the first time they met.
The couple hit it off and eventually tied the knot in April 2018.
They welcomed their third child, Bennett, in February after Travis’ Chiefs defeated Jason’s Eagles in the Super Bowl, 38-35.
Jason and his wife attended the red carpet premiere of the “Kelce” documentary last week at Suzanne Roberts Theatre in Philadelphia.
