She was living the urban dream — until she moved into a costly, filthy nightmare.
Excited to begin her tenancy in a new Big Apple apartment, a Gen Z fashionista was crestfallen to find her new home strewn with garbage on move-in day, leaving her temporarily homeless and forced to pay an extra $250 to reschedule the movers.
“This has to be a prank,” groaned Shanna Yeh, 23, in the closed caption of her trending TikTok tell-all. “Moving in New York is not for the weak.”
In the chaotic clip, which has scared up over 510,000 views, Yeh, a thrift store couturier, explained that her new landlords advised her that the keys to her new place would be inside of the apartment, available for retrieval on her first day of residency, October 1.
However, rather than swinging the door open to her cozy new digs on the set date, the brunette was, instead, sourly greeted with a litter of trash bags blocking her entryway to the apartment, which was locked from the outside — preventing her from obtaining access.
“I [was] so excited to see the apartment empty and clean, and this is what I f- -king find,” said Yeh, offering social media spectators photographic proof of the junk-ridden hallway leading up to her living quarters.
“These are all trash bags full of who knows what,” the outraged occupant continued, in part, adding that she was forced to leap over the heaps of rubbish, only to find that the door was sealed shut.
“I was like, ‘How the hell are my movers going to carry my bed frame, mattress, desk up these stairs and into the apartment with all this stuff in the way?.’”
Yeh contacted the apartment building’s management company, seeking support amid the sea of scourings. However, she claimed the property overseers failed to return her calls for help after five hours.
A cleaning crew eventually came to Yeh’s aid, prepared to remove the filth out of her apartment. And when she advised the junk haulers that her front door was locked, a crafty cleaner broke into the locked pad with a screwdriver and a credit card.
But once Yeh finally crossed her new doorsill, she was shocked to learn that its interior was just as unkempt as the exterior.
“It is so dirty and filled with furniture,” Yeh complained. “The fridge was full of food, the kitchen cabinets were jam-packed with stuff.”
She knew moving into the disarrayed dump would be virtually impossible.
“I was like, ‘I can’t move [in]…Where am I supposed to live tonight?,” questioned Yeh, noting that she’d already paid rent for the untidy unit.
“So, guess who had to pay $250 to reschedule the movers,” she added. “It has been one hell of a morning, one hell of a first of the month — I don’t know what this means for my next year here.”
Unsurprisingly, TikTok watchers weighed in with their two cents on Yeh’s sullied homestead.
“This is so New York,” spat a jaded commenter of the messy situation.
“The new place should pay the $250 fee and all other costs incurred. And rent should be withheld for each day you are not moved into a clean apartment,” said a separate supported.
“This is like honestly my worst nightmare,” another wrote.
“They should get you a stronger more secure door while they are at it! If the guy can open it with a credit card and screwdriver,” penned a spooked onlooker, to which Yeh replied: “[I] literally already added a deadbolt.”
“Moving in New York is never easy. No matter how well you think you’ve prepared,” another viewer chimed.
And NYC naysayers might be right.
Brooklynite Trina Rose, 29, reached TikTok-viral reign in September 2022, after revealing that her landlord had demanded an $800 rent increase on her rat- and roach-infested apartment, which was also prone for knee-high flooding.
And in August 2023, Piper Phillips, a Chicago native relocating to Gotham, told The Post she was shaken after being hit with over $21,000 in “ridiculous” hidden fees by the proprietors of a one-bedroom Midtown condo she considered renting.
Luckily for Yeh, however, her New York City-living fantasy was ultimately realized on Oct. 3, when she moved into her freshly cleaned place without incident.
“I’m so excited to be living here and to make new memories,” said the belle from her new bedroom.
