Julia Roberts is a pretty woman with pretty high morals.
During her iconic three-decade-spanning movie career, the actress has never appeared naked on camera, and in a recent interview with British Vogue, she explained why she’s kept her films “G-rated.”
“You know, not to be criticizing others’ choices, but for me to not take off my clothes in a movie or be vulnerable in physical ways is a choice that I guess I make for myself,” she said. “But in effect, I’m choosing not to do something as opposed to choosing to do something.”
The 56-year-old was interviewed by screenwriter Richard Curtis, whom she worked with on the film “Notting Hill,” for her British Vogue cover debut.
During the feature, Roberts revealed that her famous cousin may be why she’s never felt the need to take it all off onscreen, even when she played the role of a prostitute in the 1990 hit film “Pretty Woman.”
“Not long ago, I did my whole family tree with the brilliant Dr. Henry Gates,” she recalled. “If you’ve seen his show, ‘Finding Your Roots’, it’s brilliant and I’m obsessed with it. One of the things he does at the very, very end is he tells you who they have discovered you are DNA cousins with.”
“I won’t even say, ‘Can you guess who I’m DNA cousins with?’ because there’s no telling what horrible person you would choose just to embarrass me in this interview, but I am DNA cousins with Gloria Steinem,” she added.
Steinem, 89, is a trailblazing feminist and an acclaimed journalist who emerged as the leader of second-wave feminism in the United States. She launched Ms. magazine in 1972, the first periodical to bring feminism and the women’s rights movement to the forefront of the American psyche.
This isn’t the first time the “Pelican Brief” star has discussed why she keeps her clothes on while filming.
After welcoming her twins Hazel and Phinnaeus in 2004 and son Henry in 2007 with husband Danny Moder, the actress admitted her rule of keeping her clothes on only strengthened.
“You know it’s not really what I do, so if you are going ask me to do it, you have to expect it to be toned down,” she explained to the U.K’s The Standard. “You know, as a mum of three, I feel like that.”
The Oscar-winning actress also famously toned down her sex scene with Clive Owens for the 2009 film “Duplicity,” and for Roberts stripping bare would only strip the integrity of her performances.
“I wouldn’t do nudity in a film,” she told OK! in 2007.
“To act with my clothes on is a performance,” she added. “To act with my clothes off is a documentary.”
