Carys Whittaker is a mom of two and high-profile digital creator who shares videos of her outfits and daily life with her kids, as well as exposing just how fake social media can be.
Something her 1.8 million followers love her for is her honesty around weight gain and bloating after having her two precious babies.
In a recent Instagram post that has already been viewed more than six million times, size 14 Carys shares her advice on what to say to strangers who are inquisitive about her rounded tum.
“I’m not pregnant!”
“Something I get asked about all the time is whether I’m pregnant or not and I’m not pregnant – this is just the shape of my belly,” she shares in the clip whilst getting dressed.
“Off the back of that, one of the things that I get asked about most, is how to deal with people asking you whether you’re pregnant, especially if it’s in public and you’ve got to reply straight away on the spot.”
Carys says she has a simple and yet clever reply that helps her quickly deal with the anxiety that comes with being asked such a personal question.
“This is just the shape of my belly”
“For me, what helps is expecting that is what is going to happen. It takes away the surprise element of being caught off guard, and it allows me to reply calmly with ‘oh, no, I’m not pregnant. This is just the shape of my belly’.”
“That way I can get on with my day in peace without feeling upset or angry and there we have it – outfit of the day!”
The sweet clip showing Carys in a lovely body hugging dress, baggy jacket, slides and handbag, is accompanied by a caption that makes anyone who has ever been asked this personal question, feel so much better.
“Prepare for the silly questions and they can’t catch you off guard,” Carys writes.
“If you’ve ever been asked if you’re pregnant or feel anxious about it happening, you’re not alone. This advice might not be for everyone but it’s what works for me!”
The comments on the viral post show just how often other women have been asked this question and often at times when they feel sensitive about their postpartum bodies.
“‘OMG your pregnant again?’”
“A couple of years ago when my first baby was around 9 months old we went out to get a hotdog,” one woman commented.
“The lady behind the desk said loudly, ‘OMG and you’re already pregnant again?’ and everyone heard it… But nope, that was just what my belly looked like. On top of that I was wearing a new dress for the first time and before leaving home I was really happy with how I looked in it. Haven’t worn it since.”
Another added: “ I got asked if I was pregnant about 5 years ago and I was a slim size 10. I still think abut it now if I wear anything tight fitting. Even though I’m proud of my new body which housed and birthed my beautiful daughter, it’s always on my mind!”
While many women could relate to being asked about their non baby-filled bellies, some had further comebacks and advice to offer.
“Someone asked me once and I said, ‘no I’m just fat’ and walked off!”
“This is really awkward for you”
A second suggested putting the embarrassment onto the interrogator: “This is going to be really awkward for you but I’m not pregnant.”
Finally a few had experienced the silver lining.
“I got offered a seat on the train seven months postpartum – I took it!”
