San Francisco’s old-school nightlife scene is in for a shakeup — this time in the heart of the Mission.
The Make Out Room and Latin American Club, two longtime 22nd Street bars that have hosted generations of drinkers, musicians and Mission regulars, have been put up for sale by longtime owner Martin Rapalski, according to SFGate.
Rapalski opened the Latin American Club in 1993 and bought the Make Out Room in 1997, making the neighboring spots fixtures on 22nd Street for nearly three decades.
The owner told the outlet business has improved as diners spill into the bars after dinner — but after three decades, he’s simply ready to move on.
“I’m just kind of bored, actually,” Rapalski told SFGate. “I just would like to do something else. You know, it’s a long time to do one thing. I really never expected the bars would last that long.”
The Make Out Room is listed for $450,000, while the Latin American Club is listed for $350,000, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Both bars are listed as profitable.
The possible sale is especially notable for the Make Out Room, which has long served as a small but important stage for local music and touring acts. Over the years, Rapalski said the venue has hosted named including Jonathan Richman, Cake, the Decemberists, Grandaddy and Tracy Chapman.
The listings come as San Francisco’s independent music scene is already facing major changes, with Thee Parkside heading toward closure and Bottom of the Hill nearing the end of its current era, according to SFGate.
Rapalski said he hopes whoever buys the bars keep their identities intact, along with the staff and neighborhood feel that made them last this long.
His nightmare scenario is a new owner turning the Mission staples into something sanitized and soulless.
“People hate to see things like that change drastically. That’d be the worst thing, somebody came in and made it some sterile yuppie place,” he told the outlet.
Rapalski said he has already received heavy interest from potential buyers and expects a deal could close within the next two months.
Shows at the Make Out Room are booked through the end of the year — giving regulars at least a little more time to drink in the old version of 22nd Street before whatever comes next.
