It wasn’t lost on Harry Styles what occurred in Madison Square Garden during the NBA playoffs. It also wasn’t lost on him that he wasn’t the sole star among the crowd on Saturday night.
“Have the king of New York in the house tonight,” Styles said. “Mr. Jalen Brunson.”
The crowd erupted at the announcement and the three-time Grammy Award winner went on to salute Brunson, who was sitting in the stands alongside his wife, Ali.
“I salute you,” Styles added.
Brunson, who is fresh off leading the Knicks to their first championship in 53 years, was disguised in a black hoodie with sunglasses and his usual Siegelman Stable hat. He clapped and patted his chest near his heart in thanks to Styles.
The roaring from the crowd carried on for several moments and Styles started to bow to the three-time All-Star.
“He’s just trying to have a quiet night out. Not a chance,” Styles joked.
“It’s like Mickey Mouse going to Disneyland,” he added. “Thank you for being here with us. Congratulations. Make some noise, everybody.”
Ali went on to share a photo and video from the night on her Instagram story.
In a video of Styles singing “Cinema” off of his previous album, “Harry’s House,” Ali revealed it’s the couple’s first time back at the World’s Greatest Arena since the championship.
“First time back at MSG and now looking at those banners a bit differently,” she wrote before adding a crying emoji and orange heart.
“Harry was incredible,” Ali added.
Mere months ago, the Knicks clinched their first NBA championship since 1973. They defeated the Spurs in five games, sending the fan base into hysterics at their long-awaited title, and Brunson took home the NBA Finals MVP.
Styles, who also has a banner in The Garden for his 15 nights performed there in 2022, is in the middle of a 30-night residency for his new album “Kiss All the Time, Disco Occasionally” at the arena that will run through Oct. 31. He hasn’t shied away from acknowledging other happenings MSG has seen this year, including the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
The Knicks will hang their championship banner on Oct. 20 ahead of the season opener against the 76ers.
It has been an eventful summer for Brunson and it has continued into the early fall.
The couple was recently seen at the U.S. Open, attending the men’s semifinal match between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. Brunson is also set to host the “SNL” season premiere on Sept. 26.
He will be the first Knicks to ever host the iconic sketch comedy show.
