NYC tops latest list of coolest cities

King of cool.

A recent ranking of the coolest cities across the United States and Canada crowned New York City the coolest of them all.

To determine apex coolness, Canada Sports Betting analyzed 150 cities using six indicators of relative radness: music events, sporting events, coffee shops, breweries, museums, and parks.

Each city received a score out of 100, combining the overall availability of experiences (75%) with their concentration per square mile (25%).

The study ranked the cities overall and also provided lists based on city size.

“What makes a city cool isn’t necessarily its size or reputation, but how much it offers people in their everyday lives,” the study authors said.

“The best cities combine entertainment, culture, local character, and places to unwind, giving residents and visitors plenty of reasons to explore.”

With a score of 89.11, New York took the top spot for overall coolness and coolest big city.

New York also boasted an availability score of 98.02, the highest in the study, reflecting the city’s extensive list of events and amenities, including 171 museums, 2,629 coffee shops, 43 breweries, and over 2,000 parks.

“New York stands out because it offers something for almost everyone. Whether you’re a sports fan, a music lover, or someone who enjoys discovering new neighborhoods, there’s always another experience around the corner. That variety is what sets it apart,” said the study authors.

Boston, with an overall score of 79.87, came in a distant second. San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. rounded out the top five for best overall and best big cities.

Denver scored tenth on the big-city list, boosted in part by its 74 breweries.

Among midsize metropolises, Minneapolis, Minnesota, earned high honors, followed by the Rust Belt revival cities of Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Cincinnati.

At the small-city level, Richmond, VA, earned the top spot for coolness, followed by Boise, ID, Huntsville, AL, and the Canadian cities of Regina and Oshawa.

Regina, located in Saskatchewan, is home to 362 parks, the most among small cities.

In addition to its recent ranking of overall coolness, NYC’s historic Orchard Street was recently named the “coolest” in America — and one of the coolest in the world.

The historic street earned the No. 9 spot – and the top slot among other US cities – in Time Out magazine’s annual ranking thanks to its timeless blend of old-school New York and youthful innovation across dive bars, tattoo shops, and al fresco dining.

Further, and in spite of NYC’s high cost of living, low chance of finding love, and other not-so-shining features (we’re looking at you, rat population) — it was still deemed the “most Instagrammable” city in the US in 2025.

But it ain’t all glad rags and laurels; earlier this year, a shocking study revealed that a majority of New Yorkers no longer think NYC is the greatest city in the world.

55% of voters are somewhat or very dissatisfied with their quality of life in the city.
