This revelation takes twinning to a whole new level.
Identical twins Sam and Alex Steffes are blowing their 592,000 TikTok users’ minds by claiming that both women could actually be the mother of Sam’s baby girl, Giada.
“When you think about how you carried and gave birth to this baby, but you are both genetically considered her mom,” Sam wrote over a video that has more than 2.1 million views.
“That’s mind-blowing to me. Identical twin problems!” she captioned the post.
This can, in fact, happen. Identical twins are created in the same egg, which means they share much of the same DNA. When a twin has children, it is impossible to determine which one is the parent through DNA testing.
The UK’s DNA Diagnostic Centre, which uses men as an example, explains: “Even with the most advanced technology available today, it would still be impossible in any practical or affordable way to genetically differentiate between the two fathers for paternity purposes.”
This also means that children of identical twins would be genetically more similar to half-siblings than cousins, per a study.
That mind-boggling information sent the TikTok comment section into a spiral but also brought some insight from the kin of other sets of twins.
“Can confirm! Did the 23andMe test and because my mom didn’t do the test but her twin sister did, my aunt showed up as my predicted mom,” one user shared.
“My mom and her twin still argue over who is my real mom,” another stated.
“I love this bc I feel so close to my aunt (mom’s twin) it’s like having two moms,” one gushed.
“Like why you had to do all the work?!” another pitied Sam.
“Does the little [one] ever get mixed up about who her mom is when all 3 of you are hanging out?” one curious user asked.
“She actually doesn’t! She knows who mommy is for sure,” the twins replied.
